INSTITUTE OF CHINESE MATERIA MEDICA CHINA ACADEMY OF CHINESE MEDICAL SCIENCES Institute of Chinese Materia Medica, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences was founded on December 19, 1955. It is the first national institute specially engaged in the research of Chinese materia medica in China. Since 1983 , the institute has been designated as the World Health Organization Cooperating Center for Traditional Medicine. Their research areas include identification of Chinese materia medica, resources development, processing and preparation, chemistry, quality standard, pharmacology and toxicology, and literature study on Chinese materia medica. The institute has 189 employees, including 175 researchers and technicians and among them 77 being professors and associate professors. There are five research departments and seven research centers in the institute. They are Department of Property Theory and Complication Science of Chinese Materia Medica, Department of Herb Literature, Department of Identification of Chinese Materia Medica and Molecular Natural Pharmacy, Department of Pharmacology of Chinese Materia Medica, Department of Pharmcokinetics of Chinese Materia Medica, Research Center of Chemistry and Qualify Evaluation for Chinese Materia Medica, Research Center of Pharmaceutical Forms of Chinese Materia Medica, Research Center of Resources of Chinese Materia Medica, Research Center of Safety Evaluation for Chinese Materia Medica, the Qinghaosu (artemisinin) Research Center, Research Center of Processing for Chinese Materia Medica, and R& D Center of New Drugs of Chinese Materia Medica. Three periodicals are published nationwide, such as national academic periodicals “China Journal of Chinese Materia Medica”, “China Journal of Experimental Traditional Medical Formulae”, and popular science magazine “Family and Traditional Chinese Medicine”. Doctoral and master courses have been provided for both domestic and oversea postgraduates of Chinese Materia Medica and Integration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicines. Meanwhile, postdoctoral programs are also offered for candidates of above two fields. Since foundation of the institute, 17 projects have been awarded national prizes, 49 projects have been awarded ministerial and bureau prizes and 161 projects have been awarded academic prizes. Among these awarded projects, the main achievements are “The new anti-malaria medicine Qinghuaosu (Artemisinine)”, “Clinical study on the prevention of esophageal carcinoma by Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Pills of Six Drugs Including Radix Rehmannia)”, “Study of systemic development of Trichosathes genus plants and molecular identification of crude drugs”, and “ The development study of the processing techniques of the prepared rhubarb and its use in clinical practice”. Up to now, the institute has developed 29 new drugs. At present, the institute is undertaking more than 110 research projects, which are respectively supported by Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Personnel, and State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, etc.

The institute has been playing an active role in collaboration and exchange with international academies, institutes, universities and pharmaceutical companies. National academic forums and international exchanges have been regularly organized. Moreover, the institute, as the collaborating center of WHO for traditional medicine, has established extensively internationally cooperating relationship with research institutes, universities, hospitals and pharmaceutical companies belonging to more than 60 countries and regions continuously. Annually, more than a hundred of international experts and scholars in dozens of groups pay visits to the institute. Meanwhile, experts from the institute go abroad frequently to lecture, investigate, and cooperate, for increasing influence of Chinese materia medica throughout the world. The Institute is willing to cooperate with colleagues from both domestic and abroad, and through common efforts to make traditional Chinese medicine cause with its unique glamour towards glorious future in mankind's struggle with diseases in new century. (Qinghaosu(Artemisinine)-A Novel Ingredient with Anti-Malaria Activity The Qinghaosu (artemisinin) Research Center : In early 1970s, Qinghaosu (artemisinin), as a novel ingredient with anti-malaria activity, was successfully developed. Afterwards, the Research Center for Qinghao( Artemisia annua) and Qinghaosuo (Artemisinin) has established, and dihydro-Qinghaosu and other 6 new drugs were ideveloped; Two achievements were respectively awarded National Invention Prize in 1979 and the National Top Ten Achievement of Science and Technology in 1992. R& D Center of New Drugs of Chinese Materia Medica R& D Center of New Drugs of Chinese Materia Medica is mainly built on former Medical Experiment Animal Center, GLP Center and the new medicine research department of Institute of Chinese Materia Medica. Research facilities are located at Chaoyang district, Beijing, China. The building occupies 13 acreage of land and has 8000 square meters in architectural area. The research center mostly operates in research of new drug of Chinese Materia Medica, health product and technology service. R& D Center of New Drugs of Chinese Materia Medica consists of several administrative offices. They are Director Office, Operation Office, Administrative Office. Operation department contains Pharmacology Lab, Medicine and Toxic effect Lab, Experimental animal room, Apparatus room. In addition, most scientific researchers in the center are capable of developing new medicine and health product. By relying on great subject advantage of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, talented researchers advantage, facility advantage, literature resources and former GLP center's experiment animal technology, the Center shall process research in screen of new drugs of Chinese Materia Medica, craftwork quality, medicine effect, toxic effect, and clinical experiment. The center also provides technology support, technology consultation, technology training, technology communication and graduate student program, etc. Periodicals: Family and Traditional Chinese Medicine is the first large general popular scientific journal of traditional Chinese medicine in national wide. It was initiated at the end of 1993. Columns of the journal concern famous doctors, general knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine, prevention and treatment of common encountered diseases, experts' clinic, mental health, etc. In 1999, the journal won the second prize of excellent journal of traditional Chinese medicine. Moreover, the editorial board was titled as excellent group of popular science magazine of traditional Chinese medicine of China, in 2003. Chinese Journal of Chinese Materia Medica , as an academic periodical of Chinese materia medica, was initiated in July, 1955, which is undertaken by Institute of Chinese Materia Medica, sponsored by Chinese Pharmaceutical Association. Meanwhile, Chinese Association for Science and Technology is as the department of responsible for the journal. The journal is a semimonthly-published magazine. Columns of the journal concern cultivation, resource and identification, processing, preparation, chemistry, pharmacology, side effects and clinic applications of Chinese materia medica. Moreover, the journal is in the lists of MEDLINE data base of America, Chemical Abstract and Biological Abstract to include its articles. In 2005, the journal was honored as one of the one hundred key periodicals of third national periodical prize. Chinese Journal of Experimental Traditional Medical Formulae , as a national academic periodical, was initiated in October, 1995, sponsored by Institute of Chinese Materia Medica. The journal was chosen as core scientific and technological periodical by Ministry of Science and Technology. Moreover, State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Qinghua University titled the journal as excellent periodical of traditional Chinese medicine and national academic magazine. There are special columns including preparation, pharmacology, clinic study, summary, and information of traditional Chinese medicine. These columns concern pharmacodynamics, toxicology, pharmacokinetics, chemistry, preparation, quality analysis, prescription, clinic study and summary of literature of Chinese Mateira Medica and Chinese compound prescriptions. Scientific Achievements and New Drug Development: Since its establishment, the institute has obtained many important scientific achievements, including 17 national prizes, 49 items of ministerial and bureau prizes, and 161 items of academic prizes. By the end of 2004, 2889 papers have been published in total. The institute has developed 29 new drugs incessantly, which have been transferred to large pharmaceutical manufactures and companies. Experts from the institute have compiled and translated 144 scientific books of Chinese materia medica. Among them, there are rare specimens from different places of the world and Chinese herbal medicine specimens of Han dynasty form Ma Wang Dui tomb in Changsha, as important bases of Chinese herbal medicine study. The herbarium is in the list of world large museums, with the international number as CMMI. Library of Institute of Chinese Materia Medica: The library has an extensive collection of 40,000 books and periodicals of traditional Chinese medicine and related fields, including 11,000 Chinese books, and more than 2,500 books in foreign languages. Duration of Designation: The center has been designated as the WHO Cooperating Center for Traditional Medicine since 1983. The terms of designation and redsignations were: 1983-1987, 1987-1991, 1991-1995, 1995-1999, 1999-2003, and 2004-2008. IV . Major Achievements of the Center: Over the past 23years, the center has carried out the terms of reference significantly, joined in WHO global strategy on health care actively and made fruitful cooperation with WHO. Since 1983, 427 projects of study of the safety and efficacy of Chinese materia medica, 34 projects of further study on traditional Chinese medicine for prevention and treatment of senile and cancer diseases, 29 projects of research on anti-malaria drug-Qinghaosu and its derivatives, 56 projects of study of quality control standards of Chinese materia medica, 19 projects of study of the pharmacodynamics and mechanisms of compound prescription of Chinese materia medica, and 5 projects of study on traditional Chinese medicine for prevention and treatment of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and other severe epidemic diseases have been fulfilled. Among which, there are 10 projects awarded national prizes, 35 ministerial and bureau prizes and 110 academic prizes of Chinese Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. The most preeminent ones among these awarded projects are “T he Research of the Novel Anti-malarial Drug Qinghaosu”, “The Experimental and Clinical Study on the Prevention of Esophageal Carcinoma by Liuwei Dihuang Wan(Pills of six Drugs Including Rehmannia)”, “Studies on Annual Ring of the Bark and Its Application in Chinese Materia Medica”, and “The Development Research of the Processing Technology of the Prepared Rhubarb and Its Use in Clinical Practice”. Meanwhile, 25 new drugs of Chinese materia medica have been developed. 11 English publications of Traditional Chinese Medicine have been complied. Moreover, the center has provided professionally 46 training courses for 122 international scholars from 18 countries, dispatched by WHO, since 1983.
